These are the five core activities that all Citizens’ Climate Lobby chapters leverage to bring citizens into the political process and to ensure their contribution is constructive and makes more good possible. We call these activities the “levers of political will.”
Lobbying Congress: We train citizens how to lobby in support of our Carbon Fee and Dividend proposal by building friendly relationships with our federally elected representatives. Lobbying is one of the levers of political will.
Media relations: We train citizens how to engage with and influence the media. We write letters to the editors and op-eds, meet with editorial boards and work to place stories in all forms of media.
Grassroots outreach: We recruit and educate the public on climate solutions, citizen advocacy and how to participate with one’s government. We value service as a way to empower our volunteers and build important connections within our community.
Grasstops engagement: We seek to educate, build partnerships with and gain the support of community leaders and non-governmental organizations, both nationally and locally.
Chapter & volunteer development: We grow our local groups and improve our skills as climate advocates, helping us push more effectively on the other four levers for building political will.
The current projects each of these levers are working on are below.
Our lobbying team coordinate our yearly visits with congress in DC every summer! We have liaisons for congressional districts that maintain contact with their office throughout the year.
We write LTEs
The Grassroots team holds tabling events at least once per month across the Boston Metro area, from Dorchester to Newton to Ashland to Somerville and more. You have a good chance of finding us at farmers markets, Open Streets, and Harvest Fairs. We help our neighborhoods write letters to congress, register to vote, educate about policies like carbon cashback, and encourage them to join us and participate in our actions. The conversations we have with folks when we go out in the community are beautiful. You might come out having changed someone's mind, or got them to think deeper about climate change!
Our Grasstops team is the newest at CCL Boston. Grasstops is what it sounds like--the other side of Grassroots. Where Grassroots engagement is about talking to everyday people in our community, Grasstops outreach is about talking to community leaders and other influential people.
Coalition-building is a key value of CCL Boston. The Grasstops team is instrumental in building mutually supportive relationships between CCL and other Boston-based grassroots organizations. We invite other organizations to speak are our meetings and share important actions from activists for our members to participate in. The Grasstops team is also supporting the chapters' Carbon Cashback for MA campaign by engaging with our activist allies.
The Grasstops team is engaging the burgeoning sector of companies in the Greater Boston Area working on technologies to address climate change (AKA climatetech). Massachusetts is reported to have the most climatetech startups per capita and to be the second largest climatetech ecosystem of the past 5 years in the US (MassCEC). We hope to provide a bridge between private sector companies whose mission is to build climate solutions and policymakers. For example, the Grasstops team has been soliciting testimonies from companies who have benefited from the IRA, which you can find on the Take Action Now page. We are also planning collaborations with CCL chapters in conservative states. Through relationship-building, we hope to demonstrate that there is private sector interest in incentives for things like renewable energy and energy storage development!
The Boston chapter is a diverse community of students, working professionals, and retirees united in our desire to build the political will for a livable world. We meet monthly on Zoom to socialize, celebrate successes, and plan the month ahead. We also get together in-person for drinks, river clean-ups, and trainings.
